4 Things You Should Know Before Getting Waxed For The First Time

It can be a big hassle getting rid of unsightly body hair. Shaving is time-consuming, and hair typically grows back within a couple days. If you want to save time on your beauty routine and have smooth skin that lasts longer, you should consider body waxing. Waxing is quick, safe, and effective. Here are four things you should know before your first waxing appointment.

1. Let your hair grow.

If you usually shave your body hair, you'll need to stop for a few days before visiting the waxing salon. This is because the wax needs to adhere to your hair, which is easier if the hair is a certain length. Ideally, your hair should be at least 1/4 inch long when it's time for your wax.

2. But do trim.

Although your hair needs to be long enough for the wax to grip, hair that's too long can pose a problem as well. If you're going for a bikini wax and your hair is long, do a little trimming before your appointment. Remember that a quarter inch is the ideal hair length for efficient waxing.

3. Let your aesthetician know about any medications you're taking.

Certain medications, both oral and topical, can interfere with the waxing process. Tretinoin and adapalene are two topical medications prescribed by dermatologists to fight acne and the signs of aging. However, as a side effect they leave skin thinner and more fragile; waxing while using one of these ointments can lead to injury and even scarring. When you tell your waxer about medications you're currently taking, they can let you know if waxing is a safe option for you.

4. Don't get waxed during your period.

If it's your first time getting waxed, don't visit the salon during your period. Although it's perfectly acceptable to get waxed while wearing a tampon, your body can be more sensitive during your period. According to Women's Health, the extra hormones from your period can make waxing feel more painful. You can try getting waxed during your period when you're more experienced, but for your first time try to schedule around it.

Waxing is a great way to get rid of body hair, and the results last longer than many other forms of hair removal. In fact, when you wax regularly, your hair might grow back slower. Keep these tips in mind so your first time getting waxed can be pain- and stress-free.
